    • 1). Turn your pool pump off. Locate the water drain plug at the bottom of your sand filter and remove it by turning it counterclockwise (you shouldn't need any tools to open this cap).

    • 2). Depress the large valve handle located on the top of your filter head and turn it in between any two settings to help the water drain faster and release any pressure in the filter head.

    • 3). Loosen the two screws of the large clamp that seals the filter head to the filter body using a Philips screw driver. Remove the screws and remove the clamp. Place both hands on the filter head and pull the filter head away from the body giving you access to the sand, standpipe and laterals. Note: You may do this step while the water is draining from your filter and you don't have to remove any of the pipes attached to the filter head).

    • 4). Remove all the sand from within the filter by sucking it up with a wet/dry shop vacuum once the water has completely drained from the filter. Store the old sand in a large bin if you decide to reuse it. Remove the broken standpipe and/or the laterals from the filter.

    • 5). Place the new standpipe into the filter and attach each lateral to it once it's inside. Fill the filter with water about four to six inches above the laterals.

    • 6). Place a strip of duct tape over the top of the standpipe to prevent any sand from entering it. Refill the filter with either new sand or the old sand (new filter sand is almost white in color, replace the sand if it's a dark brown or almost black).

    • 7). Remove the strip of duct tape from the top of the standpipe and attach the filter head to it. Push down on the filter head until it sits flush against the top of the filter body. Replace the clamp to seal the filter head to the filter body.

    • 8). Depress and turn the large valve on the filter head to "Backwash." Roll out your backwash hose if necessary and turn the pump on. Backwash for one minute. Turn your pump off and set the large filter head valve to "Rinse." Turn the pump back on and run it for 20 to 30 seconds. Turn the large filter head valve to "Filter" and turn the pump on. Roll up your backwash hose.
