On May 23, 2014, a 22-year-old social loser with a long history of mental illness, who referred to himself as a "kissless virgin," killed six people, injured 13 others and then killed himself during a what he called a "Day of Retribution" in Isla Vista, California.

Elliot Rodger emailed a copy of his 137-page manifesto "My Twisted World," to his parents, at least one of his therapists, and others on Friday minutes before going on a bloody rampage near the University of California, Santa Barbara campus.

Here are the latest developments in the Isla Vista Rampage case:

Rodger Planned Rampage for Months

Feb. 19, 2015 - Elliot Rodger spent almost two years planning his killing rampage at Isla Vista by purchasing firearms and ammunition, practicing at shooting ranges and writing his twisted 137-page manifesto, in which he lashed out at the women who rejected him.

He searched the Internet about Nazis, researched terrorists and searched for how to kill people silently, but at no time during the almost two years he planned his deadly rampage did he give authorities a legal reason to deter him, according to a 64-page report released by the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office.

"There was nothing during the contact with [Rodger] that gave the deputies reason to believe he was a danger to himself or others," the report said. "Such risk factors are required in order to place someone on an involuntary mental health hold, or to legally search their residence."

Investigators believe Rodger began planning his killing spree as early as December 2, 2012 when he purchased the first of three 9mm semi-automatic handguns he carried with him on the day of the attack.

In the summer of 2013, he wrote in his diary about "The Day of Retribution" when he would "kill every single young couple at my college or in Isla Vista."

In February 2014, Rodger purchased more ammunition and began honing his shooting skills at local shooting ranges. In March, he visited two separate shooting ranges as the date of his planned attack approached.

He originally planned the attack for April 24. Two days before that date, he finished writing "My Twisted World," the manifesto that detailed his hatred for women who spurned him.

On April 24, however, he woke up suffering from the effects of a cold and decided to postpone the attack until May.

It was at this point in the case when police had direct contact with Rodger after family members informed them about disturbing videos that Rodger posted on YouTube about killing women.

On April 30, deputies did a welfare check during which Rodger was able to deceive them and wrote about it later: "If they had demanded to search my room... That would have ended everything. For a few horrible seconds I thought it was all over."

On May 22, Rodger records his "Retribution" video with his iPhone. He posted the video to YouTube just before the shooting rampage began.

On May 23, the day of the rampage, he searched the Internet for "quick silent kill with a knife." He then preceded to kill his two roommates and a friend of theirs, stabbing each of them multiple times.

As they arrived home from classes that afternoon and evening, Rodger ambushed each of his roommates separately. He stabbed Weihan "David" Wang 15 times, then stabbed Cheng Yuan "James" Hong 20 times, and put their bodies in their bedroom.

He then ambushed their friend, George Chen and stabbed him 94 times. He left Chen's body in the bathroom.

About an hour later, at 7:38 p.m. Rodger bought a triple vanilla latte at Starbucks.

At 9:18 p.m., he emailed his manifesto to 34 people, including his parents and his mental health counselors. Nine minutes later, at 9:28 p.m. the first 9-1-1 call of shots fired was reported. At 9:35 p.m., police report that Rodger is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The shooting rampage lasted only eight minutes, but Rodger fired 55 shots, killing three people and wounding 14 others, including a deputy. He hit seven people with his vehicle, before shooting himself after exchanging gunfire with police.

Parents Tried to Intervene

May 23, 2014 - Rodger's mother, Lichin Rodger, saw the email containing his manifesto at 9:17 p.m. Friday. She then went to her son's YouTube page and watched a video in which he talked about slaughtering women at a sorority house.

She called 9-1-1 and her husband and they frantically drove from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara to try to intervene, a family friend told reporters. On the way, they heard radio reports about a shooting in Santa Barbara. They were too late.

Roommates Stabbed to Death

Apparently shortly after sending the manifesto email messages, Rodger stabbed to death his two roommates and a visitor in their apartment on Seville Road in Isla Vista. Killed were Cheng Yuan Hong, 20; and George Chen, 19; both from San Jose.

Also stabbed to death was Weihan Wang, 20, of Fremont, who police believe was visiting the apartment. All three stabbing victims were students at the university.

Attack at Sorority House

Rodger then drove five blocks (See Map) to the Alpha Phi Sorority house and tried to gain entry. Residents reported hearing loud, aggressive knocking on the door, but no one opened it. They called 9-1-1 at 9:27 p.m.

Not being able to enter the sorority house, Rodger walked about 20 yards toward a group of three women. Witnesses inside the sorority house watched in horror as he shot and killed Veronika Weiss and Katherine Cooper and wounded a third woman multiple times, but she survived.

Victim Killed at Deli

Rodger then got back into his car and drove two blocks to a deli on Pardall Road. He got out of the vehicle and shot 20-year-old Christopher Martinez to death. Four foot patrol police officers reported seeing Rodger flee in a black BMW.

From his vehicle, Rodger shot at two people who were walking on the sidewalk near an area called "the loop" by Isla Vista residents. He then drove south on El Embarcadero and turned right on Del Playa Drive, where he pointed a gun at a woman.

Deputy Returns Fire

Later on Del Playa, he fired at a deputy who was on foot. The deputy returned fire as Rodger continued to drive west. He struck a bicyclist with his car.

He turned right onto Camino del Sur and then a block later turned right again onto Sabado Tarde, where he fired multiple shots at pedestrians in the area. He wounded three of them.

He continued east on Sabado Tarde back toward El Embarcadero where he encountered four police officers and opened fire on them. Three of them returned fire and Rodger was hit in the hip.

Gunshot Wound to the Head

Now wounded, Rodger circled around El Embarcadero and Del Playa Drive again. He accelerated his car into another bicyclist who flew into the windshield of the BMW and shattered it. The vehicle then crashed into parked cars along Del Playa and came to a stop.

Police officers approached the disabled BMW, pulled Rodger out of the vehicle and handcuffed him, but he was dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

Detectives found three legally purchase handguns and 400 unspent rounds of ammunition in his vehicle.

Motive Was Clear

Excerpts from his manifesto left little doubt about the motive for his killing spree:

"My orchestration of the Day of Retribution is my attempt to do everything, in my power, to destroy everything I cannot have," Rodger wrote.

"All of those beautiful girls I've desired so much in my life, but can never have because they despise and loathe me, I will destroy. All of those popular people who live hedonistic lives of pleasure, I will destroy, because they never accepted me as one of them. I will kill them all and make them suffer, just as they have made me suffer. It is only fair."
