- 1). Wait until the spring when all threats of freezing temperatures have passed. Fill a plastic storage bag half full of sterile sand and place the vervain seeds into it. Pour 1/8 to 1/4 cup of water into the bag just until the soil and seeds are moist. Insert the bag into a refrigerator and leave it there for 30 days.
- 2). Locate an area of the yard that has dark, rich soil and that has full sun exposure. The soil must be constantly moist and vervain will even thrive in soggy soil conditions near ponds and drainage ditches.
- 3). Pull up all grass and weeds from the desired planting area and loosen the soil to a 4-inch depth using a bow rake or a pitch fork.
- 4). Water the soil with a garden hose until it is thoroughly damp to a 3-inch depth.
- 5). Remove the vervain seeds from the refrigerator and spread the sand mixture on top of the planting site as evenly as possible. Do not attempt to separate the seeds out from the sand.
- 6). Press down on the top of the planting area gently with your hands to push the seeds barely into the surface of the soil. Do not cover the seeds with soil since they require light to germinate.
- 7). Wait until the seeds germinate and then thin them by pulling out the weakest plants, leaving at least 12 inches of space between each vervain plant.
- 8). Water the soil as often as needed to keep it constantly wet throughout the growing season until the plant dies back in the fall.
