    Race to the Base

    • This exercise teaches players how to make good turns going from base to base. Show the players the proper way to run the bags, including turns and foot placement. Divide the team and put an equal number of players at each base. Yell "go" and have one person on each bag start running around the bags until they reach the bag they started at. After they tag the hands of a teammate at the same bag, the teammate should take off running. The team to complete the circuit first wins.

    Short Toss

    • This drill teaches players to practice good pitching form while also going with the pitch. Batter should take a stance at home plate. The pitcher should stand between 10 and 15 feet away. The pitcher will pitch five outside, five inside, five over the middle and a combo of five high and low pitches. The hitter needs to pick the good pitches to swing at, making good cuts and letting bad pitches go.

    Diving Drill

    • Sometimes you need to dive to make the play. This drill will teach players how and when to dive for the ball. It also will help them work on getting up quickly to make a play. Divide the players into two lines if there are two adults or coaches present. One line should go to left field and the other to where the second baseman stands. One player should cover third and first base. The first player in line should get down on one knee with the ball in his glove. They should dive, get up and throw the ball to the target player at first or third base. The target player throws the ball to the next person in line and the cycle repeats. When the players improve, the coach can throw the ball in such a way that the players will have to dive.

    Field those Grounders

    • This drill helps infielders and outfielders practice fielding ground balls. Put players in pairs. One player should start with the ball and the other should be ready to field, about 20 feet away. The player with the ball should throw about 10 ground balls straight at the fielder. The fielder needs to field the ball and throw it accurately to the thrower. After 10 balls, the players should switch roles. As their skills develop, they can start throwing balls to the sides for fielding.
