The Michigan Department of Natural Resources, or DNR, is responsible for state parks, state forests and other state-owned natural sites. Among its listings are nearly 150 campgrounds in state forests, all of which are located beside a waterway. Activities include wildlife watching, fishing, hiking and horseback riding. The DNR website lets you search by type of campground, giving you a choice of anything from primitive sites to full-service campgrounds. - You'll find horse facilities and a natural setting at 4 Mile Trail Camp, along the Au Sable River. The equestrian group campground offers access to a boat launch on nearby Kneff Lake, canoeing on the Au Sable River, along with fishing, wildlife watching and hiking. The campground is located along the Michigan Shore to Shore Riding and Hiking Trail, which crosses the width of Michigan. Campers without horses are also welcome.

michigandnr.com - Waterloo Sugarloaf Campground, beside Sugarloaf Lake, is a developed campground with 164 sites. It's one of four campgrounds located in the 20,500-acre Waterloo Recreation Area; sites include 30- or 50-amp electrical service. The campground provides a separate dump station for RVs. Facilities at the campground include swimming, a boat launch for registered campers, a children's playground and shower blocks. A one-mile woodland trail lets you enjoy nature, or you can walk on the beach. The Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center is an interpretive center for local wildlife and geology.

michigandnr.com - The Graves Crossing State Forest campground is located along the Jordan River, which is a designated "Wild and Scenic River." This rustic campground offers access to off-road vehicle trails, hiking trails, fishing and canoeing. The 10 sites are first-come, first-served and can accommodate tent campers and small RVs. You'll find pit toilets, hand-pumped well water and wildlife, including beavers.
