The Facts

• The Cepacol brand includes a line of lozenges, throat spray and mouthwash designed to relieve sore throats. Some formulas include relief from coughing or post nasal drip and there is also a sugar-free version. The Cepacol website claims that it is the No. 1 brand used by hospitals, and that the products use a blend of analgesic (menthol) and an anesthetic (benzocaine). Before using Cepacol, it is important to be aware of any potential side effects or drug interactions.
  
  

Side Effects

• Most people experience few or no side effects when using Cepacol. However, there is a risk that you will experience some side effects like numbness in the throat or mouth. If the numbness does not go away, you should check with your doctor or pharmacist. There is a possible risk of severe allergic reaction like hives, rash, labored breathing, swelling (tongue, lips, face or mouth) and a tight feeling in your chest. If you experience any of these severe symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
  
  

Considerations

• You should not use Cepacol if you have a history of allergic reactions to any of the ingredients in Cepacol or from similar anesthetics (like lidocaine or xylocaine). Be sure to tell your doctor about any other medications (including vitamins and herbal supplements) that you are taking. Since very little of the medication is absorbed into your bloodstream, the risk of interaction is low, but it's best to be safe. Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, breastfeeding or if you have any allergies.
  
  

Safety

• Cepacol is safe to use if you have hypertension or heart disease. Diabetics should use the sugar-free lozenges or throat spray (which does not contain sugar). Cepacol throat spray is safe for children ages 6 and and older with adult supervision. Cepacol lozenges are safe for children ages 5 and up. Each lozenge contains nine calories (sugar-free lozenges have 5 calories) and contains no wheat, gluten or grains. Cepacol does not contain aspirin.
  
  

How to Take Cepacol

• The benzocaine in Cepacol numbs the nerve endings in your throat, soothing the soreness. Follow package directions and do not take more than the recommended dosage. If using lozenges, allow the lozenge to dissolve in your mouth (instead of chewing it) to allow for maximum effectiveness. Don't take more than the recommended dosage or use Cepacol for more than two days without consulting your doctor.
