Let There Be Light - How to Beat Being SAD

Research shows that depression is more prevalent during the winter months.
And psychiatrists believe this is primarily because of Seasonal Affective Disorder (also known as SAD).
Symptoms can occur as early as October and last as late as March.
That's a big chunk of your life where you're feeling down.
Lower levels of sunlight in the body effects melatonin production making us drowsier and less alert - so what's the solution? Not everyone can afford that villa in Spain.
In the UK, conservatories may sound like an odd thing to invest in during winter.
But they offer a way to bring in as much sunlight and natural light as possible into your home - no matter what time of the year.
With specialist trench heating, conservatories can be warm rejuvenating places to be on a cold winter's day, helping to keep you energised with plenty of natural light.
As George Adkins, an expert on SAD and psychology professor at Marshall University in America says: "When we receive sunlight, our mood elevates.
" SAD symptoms vary from mild glumness to feelings of hopelessness; you can be unsocial, experience weight gain, low energy and concentration levels.
Light therapy, as well as socialising and exercise, can help.
Those who suffer from SAD tend to experience it year-in year-out.
The winter blues can impact on your productivity at work, or your studies as well as your social life and general well being.
Our environment can have a direct impact on our emotional health.
Tops to beat SAD: oExpose yourself to natural light wherever possible (if you have a conservatory, install a good trench heating system so it's comfortable all year round!) oKeep up activities and socialising - an engaging routine will keep boredom at bay oEat well, drink in moderation and exercise regularly (exercise indoors if it's too cold out) oCompany keeps away misery - stay connected with friends and family Conservatories used to have the bad rep of being stifling in summer and freezing in winter.
But now the class has been put into glass with state-of-the-art designs and conservatory heating that offers under floor heating solutions.
