Rookie baseball leagues help children learn the rules of baseball and increase athletic skills. Ages of players can range from six to 18 years old with the majority of rookie baseball teams catering towards the younger age groups. Tournaments teach players the basics of tournament play and give pride of accomplishment. - There is a 14-player limit per team for ages six to 13. Playing with more than 14 players would make it difficult for each child to have a turn at playing during each game, which is a requirement in young player rookie leagues. Teams which have older kids, 14 to 17 years old, can have up to 17 players on a roster, but there are no mandatory play rules for this age group.
- Rookie teams with children ages six to 13 rotate players during every game. Each player gets, at least, one turn at bat and one full inning in the field for every game.
- The average time limit for younger players is one hour and thirty minutes per game during the regular season games. For tournaments, the time limits are often lifted to allow for completion of a game. If the game has continued on past midnight, umpires will request no new innings to start. The game will conclude at the completion of the inning players are in at midnight.
- A pitcher cannot re-enter the game once removed. Pitchers, age six to 13, must rest between games, this usually includes pitching no more than eight innings in three days. Individual leagues may impose other pitcher rules such as not allowing a pitcher to deliver more than 40 pitches in a game or requiring two days of rest between pitching performances.
- In regular season games and tournaments the 10-run rule is used. If, after four innings, one team is leading by 10 or more runs, the umpires and coaches will confer and decide whether to stop the game.
