How to Use Bleach to Melt Ice
- 1). Do not use bleach on any outdoor surface other than cement or concrete without first checking with an expert, as bleach is corrosive.
- 2). Cover any grass or plants around the icy surface that you wish to protect with tarps. Seal the edges by nailing them into soil, if you desire.
- 3). Put on a pair of surgical gloves and protective goggles to protect against any splashing.
- 4). Pour an even layer of bleach over the entire surface to be de-iced.
- 5). Wait 30 minutes. The ice will dilute the bleach and this will cause an exothermic reaction, producing heat and melting the ice.
- 6). Step carefully when walking on freshly cleared surfaces.
