Camping & Survival Knives
- Knives come in almost every shape and form; they can be double-edged, long, short, pocket knives, multitools and everything in between. Blades can be made from a variety of materials, including stainless steel, carbon steel and even bone. When choosing a knife for camping or survival, you will need to consider all these options.
- Survival knives can be used to cut cords or wood for emergency shelters or traps. They can help you defend yourself against animals or catch fish. Most survival knives are not folding knives; instead, they have fixed blades. The metal blade should extend down into the handle to reinforce the strength of the knife; this is called a full tang.
Blades can be double-edged, smooth or serrated, and short or quite long. Double-edged knives tend to be weaker, and the tips often break off. Serrated blades can be handy but are difficult to sharpen; their uses are also limited. Preferred blade length depends on the individual using the knife. Some people are inclined to buy bigger, but a smaller blade can be easier to manage. Blades are usually 4 inches to 6 inches long.
Most knife blades are either stainless steel or carbon steel. Stainless steel will not rust as easily, but these blades are more difficult to sharpen. Carbon steel blades rust more easily but sharpen well. Striking a carbon steel blade can produce a spark, if you need to start a fire. - Campers tend to like using multipurpose knives. These knives have a variety of features that can include everything from can openers to toothpicks. These are folding pocket knives; you will want one with a guard on it, to prevent it from closing on your fingers. The blade should be sturdy and easy to sharpen. Any extra features will be a personal choice; scissors, saws and bottle openers are common features. Ensure that the blade extends into the handle.
- Choosing the right knife (or knives) is a very personal decision. It is best to go to a local store and feel the knife. How it feels in your hand will be an important factor.
