How to cut a 1/4-inch threaded rod
- 1). Measure the length you need to cut the 1/4-inch threaded rod, and place a mark at that spot with the permanent marker.
- 2). Wrap duct tape around the threaded rod, starting 2 inches past the mark you placed on the rod, and continue wrapping duct tape around the rod until you have a section of threaded rod protected that is wider than your mounted vise.
- 3). Place the threaded rod into the vise, with the mark you made 2 inches past the jaws of the vise. Turn the handle of the vise to secure the threaded rod into the vise.
- 4). Put on your safety glasses, and align the blade of the hacksaw with the mark on the rod.
- 5). Cut through the threaded rod by pushing and pulling the hacksaw the full length of the blade.
- 6). Attach the abrasive grinding wheel onto the four-inch grinder.
- 7). Remove the threaded rod from the vise.
- 8). Holding the grinder with the abrasive grinding wheel spinning vertically with one hand, place the cut end of the threaded rod against the abrasive cutting wheel, and turn the threaded rod with your other hand.
- 9). Test the cut end of the threaded rod by spinning a 1/4-inch nut onto the threaded rod. If the nut does not thread onto the rod, repeat Step 8.
