How to Fertilize Arborvitae Bushes

    • 1). Feed arborvitae bushes in spring once the soil warms and new foliage growth begins to emerge. Avoid feeding the bushes any later than July since new growth after that point will not have time to harden-off before the first frost.

    • 2). Water the arborvitae bushes thoroughly the day before fertilizing them. Run water on low pressure at the base of the arborvitae for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the soil feels moist at a depth of 2 inches in a 24-inch radius around each bush.

    • 3). Use a mild, well-balanced 10-10-10 ratio fertilizer when feeding arborvitae bushes. Liquid and pellet fertilizers work equally well. Avoid fertilizer stakes when feeding arborvitae bushes.

    • 4). Apply the fertilizer in accordance with the label directions but cut the amount back by half since arborvitae bushes have a compact root system and require much less fertilizer than mature, full-grown arborvitae trees.

    • 5). Water the arborvitae bushes thoroughly after feeding them to spread the nutrients throughout the soil. Run the water on low volume for five to 10 minutes around the bushes.

    • 6). Feed the arborvitae bushes once more approximately six weeks after the first feeding, if desired. Follow the same process as the first feeding.
