The Evolution of Traveling While Pregnant

Everyone is feeling some discomfort over these troubled economic times.
More so, the family with a new little one on the way.
Soon to be born babies carry extra considerations for the parents.
Will we be able to afford the crib, cradle, rocking chair, bedding and furniture we really want for our new addition to the family? Is traveling, to be with family at this time of year wise for the comfort of Mamma and her little gift? Thinking back to the Christmas story, pregnancy, travel and beds have certainly evolved.
Traveling miles and miles on a donkey only to have no room reservations or welcoming family at the destination was difficult enough.
Delivering a baby without the aid of a safe, clean hospital and professionals to see you through the birth and then to put your baby in a bed of straw.
This is certainly a contrast to today's travel and birth conditions, even in the worst of settings.
A baby was born on the Mayflower, the parents on the way to explore a new land and way of life, knowing that any comforts they had would be created by their own labors.
No 5 star hotels to check in to with a hot shower and room service.
That baby was placed in a wicker cradle.
Travel on a ship and giving birth could not have been easy and all the new baby had for comfort was his mothers arms or the cradle with a mattress of straw.
The women traveling west came in wagons and lots of them gave birth during their travels.
Baby beds were wooden cradles or even dresser drawers with little padding.
Most mattresses were made of straw, dry weeds, wool or feathers.
Travel wasn't easy and there were few luxuries along the way.
In these economic times of recessions and job losses, it pays to think back on how far we have come.
Travel for the pregnant family is luxurious when compared to the past.
We may have to choose a less expensive crib than the designer crib we had originally wanted but our babies will never have to sleep on a bed of straw.
As expectant Mommys we will not be traveling on a donkey, wooden ship or covered wagon.
Comfortable travel is readily available and only a little inconvenient if the airlines are running late or there is holiday traffic.
And if that little gift comes early and you are traveling, there are competent emergency services everywhere.
In thinking about what we do have, instead of whatever lack the current economic situation has you in, feel blessed for family, friends, health, abilities, hope in the future and the best baby bed of all, a mothers arms.
We've come a long way, baby!
