Repurposing the Porcelain Bathtub

    • 1). Move the tub outside. Porcelain tubs are very heavy and you will need the help of at least one other person, preferably two or three. Place the tub where you want it to go in your garden.

    • 2). Paint the exterior of the tub. You can repaint the tub white, or use a vibrant color such as red or blue to draw attention to the new planter. Use a porcelain paint and apply at least two thin coats, allowing each coat plenty of time to dry.

    • 3). Fill the bottom of the tub with two to three inches of gravel. This will create drainage for your planter. If the tub has a drain that is still functional, this will also help keep water out of the bottom of the tub.

    • 4). Fill the tub with planting soil. Use enough soil to completely fill the tub to just below the lip. Do not overpack the soil since this will make it difficult for plant roots to take hold.

    • 5). Plant your flowers. Follow individual plant guidelines for spacing, but roughly estimate at least between six to eight inches in between plants. If you are planting seeds, bury the seeds one to two inches beneath the soil. For seedlings, place them into the soil as deep as the size of the cups they came in. Water them frequently and watch your planter fill in.
