    Building a Trap

    • 1). Collect a large rock, 3 sticks about 3 to 4 centimeters in diameter and about half the height of the rock, and some vine.

    • 2). Sharpen an end of one stick with a knife and put it in the ground so that it stands vertically. Use the knife to dig a hole if necessary.

    • 3). Set the second stick so that it forms a downward angle on top of the vertical stick.Tie the vine around the bottom of the second stick and pull the vine so that it goes to the vertical stick. Do not release the second stick.

    • 4). While holding the second stick, pick up the third stick and set it about halfway down the vertical stick or even with the vine so that it is at a 90-degree angle to the vertical stick and slightly crosses over. Tie it in place with the vine. Release the second stick if necessary to tie the vine.

    • 5). Put the second stick back in place and then set the rock so that it is on top of the second stick and leaning at an angle. The bait stick should touch the rock for added balance. Wait a moment to ensure the rock will not fall and then move away from the trap. When a bird or small animal puts weight on the bait stick, they will be squashed under the rock.

    Finding Edible Plants

    • 1). Look for well-known plants. Well known plants like strawberries, blackberries or walnuts are commonly found in wooded environments. The woods are filled with edible plants, but well-known plants are the first area to look. Look for strawberries in clearings with some sunlight and blackberries at the base of shrubs or similar plants.

    • 2). Avoid plants that you don't recognize. Unless you know which mushrooms are edible, do not eat any mushrooms. There are several mushroom species that are poisonous when eaten. Never eat unknown berries, leaves, mushrooms or any other plant that cannot be identified by appearance and smell.

    • 3). Avoid plants that produce a smell similar to almonds. Almond-scented weeds, berries, leaves or other plants will often produce cyanide and can kill you if eaten. Plants often look similar and one might be poisonous while another is not.
