Guns provide great memories and adventure for both hunters and target shooters. Groups enjoy shooting and hunting together in gun clubs and on hunting trips. However, tragedy can strike at any time due to failure to follow basic safety guidelines. Review safety rules regularly and remind others of gun safety in order to encourage proper handling of firearms. - Always point the gun in a safe direction. Control where the front of the barrel is pointed at all times. Determine where the safest place to point the gun is according to your surroundings.
- When holding the gun, rest your trigger finger on the trigger guard or on the side of the gun. Only touch the trigger when you have a target in your sights and are ready to shoot.
- Unload the gun after each use in a safe place, pointing the gun away from others. Always engage the safety when first picking up the gun and check for ammunition in both the chamber and the magazine before proceeding.
- Wear proper clothing while using a gun. For example, always wear bright orange on the head and upper body when deer hunting. Wear shooting glasses and ear protection every time while shooting. Wear eye and ear protection even when watching others shoot.
- Always store guns and ammunition separately, and away from unauthorized people. Purchase a gun safe for maximum protection.
- Clean your gun after each use. A gun that is not cleaned regularly can misfire and cause injury.
- Make target shooting, make sure you know the target area before shooting. Check the area around and behind the target to make sure it is clear. When hunting, make sure your target is in plain view before shooting.
- Spend time learning how your gun works. Direct questions about the gun to a local gunsmith or firearms dealer.
