The Science behind Love

For centuries, poets, song writers, philosophers and lovers have identified the heart as the "organ of love and emotions," but now, thanks to science, we know that the heart and brain communicate. This is two-way communication, with each organ influencing the other's function. The heart and brain communicate through the transmission of nerve impulses, hormones and neurotransmitters and through electromagnetic field interactions.

If this is a fact, does this confirm the long-standing notion that the brain is the "organ of love," as well?

Well, let us see what science has to say.

Anyone who has ever read the messages on candy Valentine hearts knows the brain plays a role in love and intimacy. You have feelings of love, attraction, desire and passion because of the functioning of your brain. You do well or poorly in the bedroom because of the brain. Therefore, do not be surprised to learn from the scientific literature that the brain is "the most sensitive sexual organ in the body." Next time, if you have problems in love and intimate relationships, pay attention to your brain. A troubled brain can give you more problems than you can imagine.

To feel in love you need a healthy brain, one that is free of emotional or physical trauma, not to mention drugs or alcohol abuse, plus you need the right level of hormones. If you know the difference between the functions of a male versus a female brain's functions – that is, how both brains work – you will be very successful in your relationships.

In other words, thanks to the research that has gone on in science, we now know that love is not only a matter of performance , key is to understand the science behind love. How many times have you heard the actions of lovers described as "crazy, illogical, unconditional, and unforgettable?"

Let us see what is going on in the brain of a person who is in love.

When a person is in love, he or she feels happy and excited and without any fear at all. This is understandable, because the brain wants to help you to feel bliss and is shutting down the centre of fear and negative emotions. The brain will also release the neurotransmitter dopamine, which controls the pleasure centre in the brain, with the result that you feel happy and relaxed. You are in "heaven."

Interestingly, when a person is in "a love state," could be that really be acting "a little bit crazy?" Why is that? Because activity in the frontal cortex functions of the brain, where the faculties for critical judgment are located, decreases.

When scientists scanned the brain of a person who had recently been rejected by a loved one, they noticed that the part of the brain responsible for physical pain was very active. Now you know why rejection is painful, and not just in a metaphoric sense – rejection hurts.

One of the main reasons for unhappy love is a high level of stress. Stress will kill intimacy, as well as the compassion and attachment you feel for your partner. Romance is not possible when stress is abundant.

To be in love and to perform the actions of love, your brain needs to be capable of the healthy production of one of the most important and powerful hormones – oxytocin. Oxytocin plays a role in the neuroanatomy of intimacy. It is released by both men and women. Scientists recognise this substance as the "love hormone."

If you want to keep your love for ever, you can do no better than to focus on improving your knowledge about good relationships and how to lower stress in everyday life.
