How to Replace a Broken Tub Stopper
- 1). Remove the broken stopper, either by pulling it out or by unscrewing it in a counterclockwise direction.
- 2). Unscrew the stopper body from the bathtub with a tub wrench, which is designed to grab onto the body and pull it out.
- 3). Take the stopper and body to a hardware store and purchase a replacement. It is important that the size and threads of the new stopper body match the old one so that it screws into the pipe properly.
- 4). Smear silicone caulk to the inner threads of the pipe to ensure a watertight seal.
- 5). Screw the new stopper body into the pipe, using the tub wrench to turn it clockwise until it tightens. Do not over-screw the stopper body or you will strip the threads.
- 6). Wipe off any silicone caulk that has squeezed out with a paper towel.
- 7). Insert the new stopper into the new stopper body.
- 8). Allow the caulk to cure for 24 hours before using the bathtub.
