Strange Tales 12: Which Story is False?
THE GLOWING WOMAN
There are many strange and baffling cases in the annals of medicine, and ranking near the top is the bizarre condition experienced by Anna Manaro. The year was 1934 and Anna lived in the village of Priano, near the southern tip of Italy. She was a deeply religious woman who occasionally fasted, according to her beliefs.
In April of that year, Anna had just completed such a fast – but what happened to her as a result remains a medical mystery to this day.
She began to glow. Strangely, this phenomenon only happened when Anna was in a deep sleep. During that time, an eerie and vivid electric blue color emanated from the area around her breasts!
The odd condition quickly aroused the interest of local physicians, eventually reaching the attention of the medical staff at Padua University. On April 11, Anna was thoroughly examined by Dr. Protti and five of his colleagues, all specialists, who kept her under close observation. They, too, witnessed the amazing glowing phenomenon with their own eyes as Anna slept. They performed their tests, monitored her vital signs – even filmed the phenomenon.
All they could determine was that when Anna’s chest was glowing as she slept, her heart rate doubled and her respiration dramatically increased. And they could readily see that the blue glow seemed to come out through her skin from within her body. The doctors were at a complete loss to explain it. The best theory they could come up with was something they called “radiant blood,” but had to evidence to support the idea.
Whatever it was, the weird phenomenon did not harm Anna in any way, and she felt no ill effects from it. The condition simply went away after a few weeks.
