Authors and Artist need to be marketers.
The good news is that with the internet, it is easier that ever to do that.
One of the first things I discovered as an author is that it was up to me and me alone to promote my book.
I thought about devoting this article to telling you the reasons why you need to be and entrepreneur.
After starting a paragraph and thinking about it, I realized that you will discover the same in very little time.
So, it is better to examine some of the elements you will need to market your book.
Know thyself.
Are you and introvert or an extrovert? I am an introvert that learned to appear extroverted at times.
If you can do this, make sure you get with your local libraries and bookstores to set up a book signing and/or reading.
Is public speaking not your thing? Whether it is or not, there is another skill you need to learn, Internet Marketing.
There are all types of facets to internet marketing.
This is a brief overview of things that have worked for me.
Look into article marketing.
Where are you now? You are on an article site reading an article that interests you.
You can write articles and submit them as well.
Article sites always provide a resource box at the bottom.
Most time you will find a link to more information.
Many article authors send you to their blog or some other type of information with the intent of building their relationship with you.
(That should be the intent anyway.
) Best of all, article marketing generates quality traffic that is actually interested in what you have to say (all traffic is not equal, but that's another article).
Advertise in an e-zine.
Whatever you produce; fiction, nonfiction, photos, art, there is an e-zine for it somewhere.
Chances are they accept advertising.
You can develop what is called a solo ad or a classified ad.
There will be a fee based on location of the ad and the readership of the e-zine.
Make certain that you write the editor first and talk about availability and terms.
Don't just send them an ad and tell them where you want it.
Get a Facebook page for your book and a twitter account dedicated to your writing.
It's free and easy.
If you are a photographer, check out Pinterest.
Start a blog.
Update it at least once a week.
You can get free blogs at Blogger and Tumblr.
Tumblr is better for photos and pictures.
If you do nothing else, listen to this last bit of advice, build an email list.
You can start a blog and add an auto responder.
This will allow you to directly contact those who are interested in your work when you've developed a new project or product.
While there are some traditional methods that also work well, the internet is accessible to all of us and is very affordable.
These techniques will help you build your initial audience or expand you current base.
Realize that you always pay for quality internet marketing with money or time.
There is no magic bullet.
Good Luck
