Brief History: The American version of The Trisha Goddard Show is considered a spin-off of Maury, the tabloid talk show on which host Trisha Goddard became familiar to American audiences.
But Goddard hosted a similar program in the United Kingdom and the U.S. version promises to follow a very similar format. So what can stateside audiences expect? Beginning with the hostGoddard was born Patricia Goddard in December 1957, her career as a television celebrity began after stints as a flight attendant and travel writer. Her first foray into broadcasting occurred in Australia, where she was both a host and news reporter. Success Down Under brought her back to the U.K. where Goddard launched her talk show career. Across the pond
Goddard's original program ran from September 1998 to December 2010. It followed a simple format from the outset - light debate about soft taboo subjects. It was a format and style Goddard inherited from a previous talk show host, Vanessa Feltz, who kicked off the program and of which Goddard took over.
But as tabloid talk shows like The Jerry Springer Show and Geraldo proved successful across the pond, Goddard's show became a bit rougher around the edges, taking on weightier topics and more taboo subjects.
Like so many tabloid talk shows before, paternity issues and lie detector tests became both classic and overused tropes.
It wasn't long before some where accusing Goddard of flat out copying shows like Maury.
But the last laugh was on her critics, as Maury himself invited Goddard to join him on Maury after her show was cancelled.
Soon Goddard was in the states, acting as both a creative consultant to the tabloid talk show, as well as a regular guest host with Povich wasn't available. Then, in 2011, Goddard announced her departure from Maury - only to announce that she was about to launch Trisha - with Povich's help and under his production banner.
More to the point, this is the third version of the program. Back in the U.K., Goddard battled her original production company and distributor after she announced that she wanted to produce the show with her newly formed production company.
Goddard let her contract run out and then relaunched the show on a rival network the next year.
The show enjoyed enormous success, but was cancelled in 2010 because of "economic conditions".
The Trisha Goddard Show joins The Jeremy Kyle Show as the latest British talk show import - reversing a trend that saw a number of American talk shows migrating to the U.K. over the past decade. What to expectSo what can American audiences expect in this first season of the new tabloid talk show? Probably a softer, but still confrontational style born out of those popular daytime shows of days gone by. It may be, too, that Goddard brings the old style to a new audience - soccer moms and middle class suburbanites, a step away from Maury's demographic, but just a different feather in the same cap. Will it become as popular as those shows? It's possible, but in 2012 season filled with heavy hitters - Katie, Steve Harvey, Jeff Probst and Rikki Lake - it's going to be hard to find an audience. But Goddard has already tasted success and she's road tested. So expect the unexpected!
