How to Trim Evergreens Into Topiaries
- 1). Purchase pruning equipment. This may seem obvious, but pruning to create a topiary requires much more specialized pruning equipment than does standard pruning. In general, the best pruning shears for topiary pruning are also the most expensive. Some pruning shears especially for topiary pruning are designed to prevent hand blisters since you hold and operate the pruning equipment for so long. Also purchase a whetstone to keep your pruning tools sharp.
- 2). Prune the evergreens to the desired topiary shape in late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins. This is the ideal time to prune any species of evergreen in order to limit injury to the tree.
- 3). Prune again in June. Topiary pruning usually requires two pruning session per year in order to get the evergreen to stay in the desired shape. When pruning, always take extra caution not to cut your fingers or hands and not to fall off the stepladder; these are the two leading causes of injury when pruning evergreens.
