Many people suffer from the debilitating condition of panic attacks.
This can affect them every day of their lives despite having medication to control the attacks.
Although it can be difficult to tell when the panic attacks will occur, there are some steps sufferers can take in order to get control of their lives.
Breathe Deeply The first step to controlling a panic attack is to breathe deeply.
When a person is having an attack, they are often left feeling so overwhelmed by it that they forget to breathe properly.
Learning to breathe properly is a common technique that doctors will prescribe in order to help a person calm down.
If you have ever had a panic attack, someone may have suggested to you to breathe into a paper bag.
Whether this works or not is undecided, but the main thing is to practise your breathing when you recognise the first stages of a panic attack.
Therefore, you should learn the proper breathing techniques and practise these techniques two or three times a day.
You may not have a paper bad handy when the next attack happens! Relax Investigate other relaxation techniques.
Although many people think relaxation techniques may come in a bottle of wine, there are other calming techniques available that do not require any sort of medication.
Meditation may be the key to helping you get over a panic attack.
Knowing the Trigger If you have regular attacks, it may be time to take a look at yourself and see if there are any common links.
Many people's panic attacks can be triggered by a specific phobia.
Do you have a phobia of spiders? Heights? Public speaking? If you do and can avoid or minimize situations where you can come into contact with your phobia, your panic attacks may be minimized or even prevented.
The best weapon - A mobile phone? This may seem unusual, but it can be of great assistance when you least expect it.
If you require medical attention for your panic attacks, having a mobile phone handy with the phone numbers of your doctor, a crisis hotline as well as other people who may form a support network may be the best defence.
If you feel a panic attack starting to occur, calling someone may be the best thing to calm you down.
A Bag of Goodies? In addition to the mobile phone, a small bag filled with supplies such as any medications, herbal tea, relaxing photos, religious items, mints, or even a good book of crosswords is another thing to consider.
An easy way to relax is to distract yourself with an enjoyable activity or simply something to look at.
Getting yourself comfortable is the key in this situation.
Panic attacks affect millions of people around the world.
Although it can be controlled through medication, preparation is the next best thing.
If you can recognize when an attack is about to occur or is in the early stages, there are many things you can do to either minimise the effects or even stop the attack from happening at all.
