Every day they seams to more and more stories of bad contractor's! I thought we would have heard the end of this by now but there is still a couple of problems on the rise.
With the way things are going in this country of the great north of USA. people are finding harder and harder to spend money and not take any chances on getting ripped off. Do you blame them?
On TV you have guy's telling them that contractors are a bad and telling people to DIY first before you call a contractor. Home owners have wasted I say in the Millions on DIY home renovations. The government is trying to help buy offering grants, rebates and this is to over shadow there own screw ups I believe. Here is another example of how this hurts the average contractor. There has been so many lay-offs and job losses in Ontario that every guy with a hammer and a pick-up truck will hit the streets trying to cash in on these so called rebates and grants. At a time when most contractors are have tuff times!
People still believe they can get some thing for nothing! I have to give 100 estimates at least to get 1 job! Why it is not because we are not good it is a saturation of the market. If you look in the local search engines you will see every tom dick or harry show up under home renovations. Go to a different search engine and you will see a hole different lists.
People are getting estimates from 25 -30 people for every job before it was more like a 1-4 chance. Everybody is trying to get the job! When the some clears there will be a big huge mess to clean-up after. All these so called home renovation guy's that most are not even insured. will be gone and the average home owner will be holding bag once again. There is a difference between a DIY guy and a specialists. Specialists have good liability insurance just in case anything happens. It is something to fall back on. A good company will give you his insurance info before he starts the job. Make sure they have it and make sure it is up to date.
How long has this company been in business and do they have a future! Do they have a website! Do they do charity work! Yes charity work! Are they giving you names of customers, Or are they just friends.
If you Insert Keywords "home renovation Specialists" in any search engine you will find better contractors. You will also notice that the listings are a little different. A company that has a good reputation will be ranked in the top 10 under these words. and you also will notice that the same companies will be listed time and time again.
