Who can be regarded as the Person of Indian Origin?

A person of Indian origin (also called PIO) can enjoy the benefits given to an NRI by the Indian Government. But prior to that, he has to prove himself to be one. Person of Indian Origin is the one has an Indian descent. However those, whose ancestors were born in countries with Indian descent, are also regarded as a PIO.

A non-native person can be duly regarded as a PIO if he obtains a PIO card launched by the Government of India in 1999. What is the eligibility criterion to obtain this certificate?
  1. The individual should not be holding the passport the Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, China or Sri Lanka.
  2. They have held an Indian passport at any time in the past before becoming a foreign citizen; or are still holding one.
  3. Their forefathers must be a citizen or a permanent resident the India and were never the citizen or permanent resident of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, China or Sri Lanka.
  4. He/she is the spouse of a citizen of India or the individuals mentioned in the clauses 2 & 3.

Obtaining or renewing a PIO card is a little long and taxing procedure. There is a procedure at every step that must be conformed with. Attaining the card is quite a difficult task, especially for those who are not that well informed about the country's legislature. Application or renewal of PIO card requires a prescribed form to be filled. Documents to be attached with the forms also vary with the place from where the application is being made. If the application is made from abroad, then the proof of present citizenship, India's citizenship, relationship with ancestors or the spouse, residence proof, and visa status has to be attached.
