Buried Treasure, X marks the spot; humans seem to like to hide valuables by burying them but there are other reasons home safes you can bury might be a wise idea for you to consider.

We all have possessions that need to be protected from one or more threats and often seek out a home safe of some kind to do the job.

Buried safes have a number of advantages and not just for items of value.

First, a safe you can bury can safeguard items you do not want others to find or steal, whether or not they have value. Thieves cannot take what they cannot find, and additionally thieves not only seldom carry a shovel but they are usally lazy too - which is why they steal instead of getting an honest job.

Second, safes you bury are pretty much impervious to fire. Your home or other building might be leveled but under just a few inches of soil the temperature will be virtually unchanged. A good buriable safe will be waterproof so there is no concern about moisture or even a deluge of water from the fire department fighting a fire.

Third, buried safes are less accessible than one in the bedroom, for instance, and that might be an advantage for someone you want to keep close at hand in case of need but not be tempted to access it unless there really is a need. Think emergency cash.

Fourth, some items you might keep in a safe you can bury would otherwise be kept in a safe deposit box. While a good buriable safe is not cheap, bank fees really add up year after year, the rental costs of safe deposit boxes is on the rise and there are only limited days and times of access to a bank; and almost certainly not in time of crisis.

Last, a safe that can be buried does not have to be large and heavy since we are relying on the earth itself to do the job otherwise assigned to steel, concrete and insulation. Once unearthed, it can be quite reasonable in size and weight, making it easily transportable to a new home or other location you might choose.

Let's talk about some of the items you might want to keep buried in an underground safe.

Important papers that would perish in a flood or tornado are one option; birth certificates, property deeds and car titles might qualify. Spare cash would certainly be prudent, though the exact amount would depend on what each person is comfortable with.

Some might want to keep a firearm safe from unauthorized access or theft in a buried safe but have access in case of civil unrest.

Others would even go so far as to keep Gold and Silver in a safe you can bury in the backyard. It is with precious metals that some often associate the term "midnight gardening" with burying valuables underground.

One thing for sure is that you want some way of letting an heir know about the buried safe in the case of your death, otherwise your valuables would truly become buried treasure for some future fortune hunter or lucky construction worker. These days you can even use your smartphone's GPS app to give exact coordinates if your buried safe's location is out in the middle of nowhere.
