How to Put New Line on a String Trimmer
- 1). Turn off or unplug the lawn trimmer.
- 2). Remove the spool retainer from the bottom of the cutting head by turning it either clockwise or counterclockwise or by depressing a release button or clip, depending on the model.
- 3). Pull the spool away from the spool head. You may notice a spring either on the spool or on the cutting head. Keep the spring in place.
- 4). Remove any old line from the spool.
- 5). Cut a length of new trimmer line 9 feet long. If the trimmer requires two lines, cut another of equal length.
- 1). Hold the spool with the spring facing up and insert the end of a line into the little anchor hole in the side of the spool. If the trimmer uses two lines, install the line in the upper area first.
- 2). Check the spool for an arrow that indicates the direction to wind the line. Wind the line around the spool until approximately 6 inches remain.
- 3). Press the line into one of the retention slots in the upper spool flange.
- 4). Insert the second line into the anchor hole in the lower area of the spool if the trimmer takes two lines.
- 5). Wind this line around the lower area of the spool until approximately 6 inches remain and press the line into the other retention slot in the upper spool flange.
- 1). Insert the end of each line through a guide hole in the cutting head and pull through to around 5 inches.
- 2). Position the spring over the line head shaft and press the spool down onto the shaft.
- 3). Pull the line or lines sharply to release from the retention slots after the spool is properly positioned.
- 4). Rotate the spool until it no longer turns, and replace the spool retainer.
- 5). Pull the lines once more to align the spool into cutting position.
