    • 1). Rake the lawn to remove lawn clippings and other litter.

    • 2). Add the herbicide to the spreader, at the amount specified on the label. If temperatures in your area of Southern California are 85 degrees Fahrenheit or above, reduce the amount of herbicide by 25 percent.

    • 3). Apply the herbicide in north-to-south strips. Add additional herbicide to the spreader, if needed, and apply it again in east-to-west strips. This pattern helps ensure that the herbicide is spread uniformly. If you miss a spot, the crabgrass can become established and spread.

    • 4). Water the lawn until the top 6 inches of soil is moist. This helps to spread the herbicide throughout the soil. If the weather is particularly warm in your area of Southern California, water the next day as well.

    • 5). Spot spray, with a post-emergent herbicide, any crabgrass growing during the summer. Follow the instructions on the label, and spray on a windless day to avoid having the herbicide drifting onto desirable landscape plants.
