    • 1). Lightly abrade the surface with sandpaper to make it easier for the primer and paint to stick.

    • 2). Apply a layer of primer to the surface with a paintbrush.

    • 3). Wait for the primer to dry completely and then apply a layer of white latex paint with a brush.

    • 4). Sprinkle a fine brown or tan sand over the wet paint. Allow the surface to dry overnight and shake off any excess sand the next day.

    • 5). Add a layer of dark brown paint. Apply the paint using the stipple effect, dipping the brush in paint and then dotting the end of the brush onto the surface instead of using strokes. Leave some of the area unpainted. Depending on how brown or red you want the rust to be, fill in the majority of the surface with brown paint, or leave a lot open for the red paint.

    • 6). Apply a red terracotta color paint, filling in the empty areas using the stipple technique.

    • 7). Spray the surface with water in a random fashion using a water mister or spray bottle.

    • 8). Stipple blue-gray paint onto the surface.

    • 9). Spray more water onto the surface in a random fashion.

Put orange paint onto a small paint brush and bend back the bristles away from the surface. Release the bristles to splatter paint onto the surface. Splatter the orange paint in random places.
