How to Refinish an Antique Mirror Frame
- 1). Apply the chemical stripper to the frame's finish with the paintbrush. Let the stripper sit for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer.
- 2). Scrape the stripper and wood finish away from the frame with the paint scraper. When you have removed as much of the finish as possible, go over the frame with the steel wool to remove any excess.
- 3). Sand off any remaining finish with the 120 grit sandpaper. Sand the entire frame with the 220 grit sandpaper to achieve a smooth finish.
- 4). Apply the sanding sealer to the frame with a paintbrush. Allow the sealer to soak into the wood for a few minutes. Wipe off any excess sealer with the rag. After the sealer has dried, re-sand the frame with the 220 grit sandpaper.
- 5). Dip a portion of your rag into the stain and apply the stain to the frame with a rubbing motion. Allow the stain to sit per the manufacturer's instructions. Wipe off any excess stain with a clean rag and allow the frame to dry. Repeat this process until the stain reaches the desired color.
- 6). Apply the finishing coat with a clean paintbrush. Use long even strokes that overlap to give the frame a clean, even look.
