Single Pole Trellis for a Small Garden

    • 1). Dig a hole approximately 2 feet deep with post hole diggers. Insert a 2-by-4 or 4-by-4 post into the hole and fill the hole, pressing the soil firmly into place. For permanent installation, fill the hole with cement that has been mixed according to package directions.

    • 2). Attach six pieces of wire or sturdy twine at the top of the post. Anchor them with staples.

    • 3). String the wire or twine to the ground, attaching each piece to a stake approximately 18 inches from the post. Space the strings evenly around the post.

    • 4). Plant six bean seeds around each string, thinning to 3 plants per string once they are growing.

    Building a Row Trellis

    • 1). Dig a hole approximately 2 feet deep with post hole diggers at either end of the row and approximately every 20 feet apart along the row.

    • 2). Bury the end of an 8-foot post in each hole. Tamp the soil firmly around the posts to support them in an upright position. For permanent installation, fill the holes with cement mixed according to package directions.

    • 3). String a wire or heavy twine tightly along the top of the posts. Anchor the wire securely to the top of each post with a staple or wrap it around a nail.

    • 4). Tie a piece of twine to the wire above each bean plant. Anchor the twine at the base of the plant by attaching it to a stake driven into the ground.

    • 5). Lift the growing bean plants onto the string and wrap the first tendril around the string. It should grasp securely and continue to climb the string.
