Its name might not sound very enticing, but the oud can be seen as a cute guitar.

What could be more relaxing, more soothing to the soul than hearing music that comes from the heart? Music is one dominating factor in our society today. It is a form of self- expression, where people can tell their story of life, love and laughter in their music. The lyrics of the song are an important aspect of music, but it can not be called music if there is neither beat nor rhythm to it. And what could bring beat and rhythm but musical instruments?

Today, we enjoy hearing from a lot of musical tools available. There are the drums, the guitar, the violin, the flute, the piano and many others. These are what we commonly see sounds being produced by our favorite bands and the like. What most people fail to realize is that there are so many more musical instruments that may not be popularly used in the current production of our music, but they are nevertheless great tools towards beautiful music.

There are many reasons why these instruments are not widely recognized or known; they may either be not commercial enough to be taken into the commercial industry of music, or they might be much embedded into one culture that we fail to see them as anything but inside that culture. The oud is one kind of instrument that is not widely known, but is a good musical instrument.

You are probably not familiar with the name. After all, it is not a terms that is regularly used, combined with the fact that this is not an instrument that is popularly known. It is actually a string instrument. It looks very much like a smaller and pear-shaped version of a guitar. But unlike the guitar that has flat surfaces on all sides, the back of this instrument is propped out at the center, giving it the very image of the pear fruit. And this is not meant for style. This shape of the instruments back allows it resonate more audibly and allows the user to experiment with more complex notes.

The first time you see this instrument, you would probably be reminded of some country guy belting out his music with friends or with a loved one. This is because this musical tool has a very country feel to it, what with its shape and size. But if you think that it is merely for that concept alone, you would be thinking wrong, because the oud has musical features that would suit a more complex production of notes.

Unlike other string instruments that have frets, this musical tool does not have any. This is advantageous by enabling you to use other materials as you see fit. The modern one also has five paired strings and an eleventh that is not paired. And of course, these are lighter to the touch than the standard guitar.

It is said to have originated in Egypt and then moved to different countries, given different names, until it reached Arabia. In there it was given its name, which means wood in Arabic.

There are many online sites that sell this musical instrument. If you are a guitarist and you want to experiment with complex notes as well as have feel of other branches of the guitar, you might want to purchase the oud.
