The town of 5000 people, Campbeltown is located in the county of Argyll and Bute in Scotland.
A former royal burgh, it is situated on the Campbeltown Loch by the Kintyre peninsula.
The town originally had a very long Scottish name which was hard for English natives to pronounce, Kinlochkilkerran but it was renamed an anglicised in the 17th century.
This was due to the fact that the town had become an extremely important area for shipbuilding and fishing and also had a significant Scotch whisky industry.
Today, Campbeltown remains one of the few places in Scotland which are categorised as whisky producing regions.
It is currently home of the Campbeltown Single Malts.
The company use to have as many as 34 distilleries, famously being proclaimed as the whisky capital of the world.
However, with prohibition coupled with the great depression in the United States, many of the distilleries disappeared with the lack of demand.
The town also has a heritage centre and a museum which has an interesting collection of artifacts dug up in surrounding the archaeological dig sites, some dating as far back as prehistoric times.
The building is also interesting in itself, built back in the 19th century.
Another thing that Campbell Town is notable for, is that until recently, it was one of the few communities in the area of the Scottish Highlands where Scots language was still predominantly spoken.
This was due to a shift in population back in the Middle Ages of people coming from the Lowlands to the area.
Since the town has a particularly remote location, it resembles certain other communities in the Scottish islands in many respects.
It is very difficult to get to and there are no ferries going air anymore as of 2007.
There is a small airport in the area which has a services on the weekends to Glasgow.
