Starting Off with an Herb Garden Kit
If space is scarce where you live, an herb kit might be the answer. You can fit one in almost any space, even on top of furniture. In this way, you can easily grow five or more herbs and not even leave the house.
Kits can be very simple and inexpensive. Home Depot offers a kit with cilantro, basil, parsley, chives and thyme for less than $20. It comes with a small stand that holds the terra cotta pots for the plants. You will have to plant the seeds, water them, and make sure that they have enough sunlight. Better yet, each plant is guaranteed to grow. Other kits can cost more and take up more space. Some have a more abundant variety of herbs.
A simple format for a kit is a large tray with compartments to hold the different plants and a long fluorescent grow bulb mounted in some way above the tray. This doesn't look that attractive, but it can get the job done. If you go this route, be sure to make provisions for water that runs off so it doesn't go on your floor.
If you don't mind spending a little money, get a grow chamber that uses only water to grow your herbs. These units have built in grow lights that automatically turn off and on to emulate the sun. They indicate when water is needed and when to put nutrients in the water. You select the herbs you want from seed packets that are sold separately. These units are designed to use a small space on a counter or table, and look rather attractive. The price is in the $160 to $200 range, with the seeds sold separately.
These interior kits do not provide a large quantity of herbs, but you can grow a half dozen or so in limited space. After 5 or 6 months, you can pick different herbs and start the process all over again.
Some of your plant stores may offer a few pots, potting soil and seeds and call this a kit, but it is not a true herb garden kit. When you start planting this way, you aren't working from a kit, you're actually gardening.
Herb garden kits can save you time and effort. If you can't plant an actual exterior garden, this is a good alternative. If you like the first kit you use, you might want to have small gardens in several rooms of your house.
