Significance of om in music

101 16
Aum (OM) is the name of Brahma, Brahma is omnipresent. A, U, M  are the symbols of Past, Present and Future. All the three are indicators of origin, condition and rhythm. Though it's one word but it is made up of (A,U,M a) three letters, it is said one word because three letters combine together to produces monotone. Three letters of ‘Aum' are the indicators of three great powers:

A Refers to the origin, power and world creator ‘Brahma'

U Refers to the care taker  ‘Vishanu'

M Refers to Lord ‘Shiva'

The combination of three powers is ‘Trimurti ‘ divine.

Aum, which is known as word, Brahma, nad or Atman (soul) Infact it is the form of that power, which  connects human body with the Brahmand (universe). The word Brahmand refers earth, Solar system, planets, satellites, all galaxies and origin of various sound, friction and  vibration due to their everlasting motion. This motion, sound and energy present in our Brahmand is termed as Brahmnad, that is this omnipresent Brahmnad is OM and the Graha (planets), Nakshtra are Omkar

In Shrimadbhagwat Gita‘OM' has been described as the energy of whole Brahmand.

("Maharshinam Bhriguraham Giramaramyekamaksharam.

Yagyanan Japyagyosmi sthawaranam Himalaya.'') (Gita-ch-10/25)

The sound of Aum (OM) is famous in all religions because sound and energy are prominent elements in every religion. Chief element means something that alives internal and external experiences of life. In the field of music, word  OMis accepted as the most pious and loving word. The OM is merged to the soul and heart of the devotee. The process of self concentration before the practice session by a music devotee is it self association with brain.

The brain first associate OM with the characteristics generated by a contineous practice and meditation and finally this pious word OM gives perfection and skillness  to devotee. In instruments also there is great impact of the elements of inner and outer media.

Outer media refers to macro parameters of surrounding that is temperature,  humidity, air density etc., whenever we play an instrument in very cold atmosphere, sometimes it causes a strain in the sound of note. Similar situation comes in existence when there is high temperature or Humidity or air density.

With reference of ‘Law of vibration of stretched sting' in physics, we see the frequency produced by string instrument depends upon length of string, mass of string, tension produced in string etc.

i.e.

n µ 1/l

n  µ ÖT

n  µ Ö1/m

note :  µ  refers proportionlity sign., Ö  refers square root sign.

Where n   is frequency, l is length of string, T is tension in string and m  is mass of string per unit length. Also :

n  µ 1/r.Öd

Where r is radius of string and d is density of material of string.

With the help of above mentioned law it is easy to understand that the pitch, loudness and quality produced by an instrument can be adjusted by proper alteration in length, radius, and tension (stretching) of string.

The order of harmonics and no number of oscillations of notes is derived by using this law and these observations had been mentioned by our musicologists far-far ago. That is the number of oscillations and harmonics produced by octave has its scientific approval too. According to scientists, a high tone may have the level of 11 octaves. The Indian, as well as western musicologists have suggested three ways to find the number of oscillations/ hormonics of 12 notes by assuming 240 oscillations/ harmonics of SHADAZ note. These are as follow-
  1. measure the length of string of respective note whose number of oscillation is to be measured.
  2. measure the length of string of SHADAZ note.
  3. Number of oscillation of SHADAZ note.

Science supports the law of conservation of energy and Sound is a form of energy, which can never be destroyed and it is carried by waves all around. Sound energy also passes in our body by waves. Hindu myth tells all the God and Godess as source of insipiration and energy. In ‘Bhagwat Gita' Lord Krishna says, "I am inside and outside you, I neither dislike nor disfavour any one, I am equal for every creature, A devotee resides in me and I resides in devotee."

("Samoham Sarvbhuteshu na me dweshyosti na priya.

Ye bhajanti tu ma bhaktyamayi te teshu chapyaham".) (Ch.9/29)

All the Richas, Mantras, Shlokas of Vedas and Puranas are presented in vocal recitation. The word ommipresent is derived from Om. In Islam ‘Allah' is considered invisible bodyless and shapeless that is ‘Allah' is also the name of Brahmand.

Om is the beej Mantra of vedas In this prospect ‘Manu' says that A, U, M, the three letters are taken from Rig Veda, Samveda and yajurveda to derive AUM (OM). According to ‘Shruti Smriti' OM is the name of almighty God.

Om is a such word for the pronunciation of which the use of toung is not needed. Om constitution three letters and the syllabi. The vibration and waves produced by its pronunciation purifies and waves produced by is pronunciation purifies and tones the intire nervous system of body. The letters and syllabi that constitute OM exists in all kind of sound and pronunciations. It is also very close and a figure of India music.

The letters that constitute OM-

A-                This orginate from throat.

U-        This originate from Heart

M-              This original from naval

1-                 "A" the first letter  of AUM (OM) refers to ‘Aakar (shape). Which can be known as follow:-

(i)                  Virat: - that something present in all creatures .

(ii)                Agni: - form of power and charater.

(iii)               Vishwadi : - Concern to whole universe

2-                 ‘U' the second letter of AUM (OM) is pronounced ‘Ukar' and can be explained as follow : -

(i)                  Hiranyagarbha: It consist of supernatural glaze and power like sun.

(ii)                Vayu(air) : This hold all living and non-living creature.

(iii)               Tezas: lighment.

3-                 ‘M' of AUM (OM) ‘Makar', which is explained as follow –

(i)                  Iswar (God); it represent knowledge thinking and growth.

(ii)                Aaditya : Immortal and pious thoughts and sound.

(iii)               Pragya : Scholars, poets, Sages, Music devotees [10]

All the qualities and components of OM is used in music. Reciting all seven notes or any single note in Aakar is the establishment of sound in inner and outer universe through a continuous vibration. Finally this practice takes form of holi and pious practice of music like a worship. In this sound is brought to a definite level with the help of Aakar and so music devotee concentrate and control all his physique, sense, and beat by this special sound. Such music devotee is called true musician as he purifies his inner and well as recitation.

The vibration produced by the pronunciation of OM affects and stimulate 72 crore veines and nerves of body, particularly brain, heart and nervous system are affected most by OM.

In Taittriya Upnishad' it is said that

("Omiti Brahma. Omitidav Sarvam. Amityetadanukriti.)

That is Om is Brahma, Om is omnipotent and omnipresent. OM stimulate energy and force to all to work.

The western scholars also have credited OM as the cause of origin of music. According to Mr. Alen Fouler in ‘Practical Yoga .' –

"The pronunciation of the sacred word "OM" is one which has engaged the attention of all the Europeans devoted eastern studies. The vibrations set up by the same word are so powerful that if persisted in, they would bring the largest building to the ground. I have tested the power of vibrations and can quite believe that the effect upon students, but pronounced in its correct method, it arouses and transform every atom in his physical body, setting up new vibrations and awakening the sleeping power of the body''.

In fact we can notice the concern of OM with art, music, literatue and culture. We can see some ancient proofs standing in support of this. Sri T.N. Ramchandran Madras: (1958) has mentioned in his book "Music through ages".

"Indus people visualize the concept of Nada and the evolution of Sapta Swara" with utmost precision. The same concept is further explained thorough Scriptographic language. The production of ‘Omkaradhavani', the primordial sound of Nada is written as–

U ( l l l l l l l )

NOTE : THIS IS A MODIFIED SCRIPT.

That is, the bijakshara ‘OM has the duration of eleven matras. In the pronunciation, syllable it self should last for a period of four Matras, the prolongation being marked by seven vertical strokes enclosed in the bracket. To be more explicit, the ‘Omkaradhvani', when altered should  continue to be herad, so long as the period indicated by the number of strokes, in a muffled tone allowing only the sound producing organs namely, the ‘Nabhi', the ‘Hridya' and the ‘Kantha' in the human body to articulate the bijakshara. The internal process is suggested by the brackets.

The above picture script is found in the excavation of Indus valley.

If one does the research on the history of music then he will find that the mankind has solved and developed his ideas, expression, and thinking level himself. The co-existance of man and nature has tought the mankind to search and analyse the mysteries and different elements of nature, Mankind himself developed his civic, cultural and political sense according to the time and era. The man of that age was also familiar with the effect of OM and the vibration produed by pronouncing OM over mind and body. They had already accumulated the capacity of concentration, emotional balance and meditation by pronunciation of OM which is now being cultivated directly or indirectly by music.

In ‘Srimadbhagvat Gita', it is said: -

(Yadaksharam Vedovido Vadanti vishanti Yadyatayo Vitaragas.

Yadichhanto Brahmeharya Charanti tatte padam sangrahen pravakshaye.)

Infact, the bijakshara OM is the instrument, device and source of orgaination of music. All the art form is extracted from the deep ocean of OM. None is out of its reach. Those who meditate and worship OM. Only can understand the deep of music .
