Tom was born at Park Avenue Hospital in Pomona California on the 8th anniversary of the bombing of the Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1949.
His father was an Irish-Scottish while his mother was a Norwegian-American.
They were both teachers.
i 1960, Waits' parents divorced and Tom lived with his mother Whittier and then they eventually moved to National City in San Diego County.
Waits discovered and nurtured his passion for music at an early age.
Using the piano of his neighbor, he self-learned playing the piano.
He often took trips to Mexico with his father as well where, he said that he affirmed his love for music during those trips while listening to a Mexican ballad that was probably a Ranchera that played on his dad's car stereo.
By 1965, Waits started playing with an R&B/ soul band called The System.
At the same time, he was also into his first job at Napoleone Pizza House in National City Later in his career in music, he would write songs about this job which he titled "I Can't Wait To Get Off Work(And See My Baby on Montgomery Avenue), something he sang in his Small Changes Album, and "The Ghosts of Saturday Night (After Hours at Napoleone's Pizza House), which he sang on his "The Heart of Saturday Night" album.
Tom waits was a fan of Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan Lord Buckley, Jack Kerouac, Louis Armstrong, Howlin' Wolf, Hoagy Carmichael, Marty Robbins, Raymond Chandler, and Stephen Foster but he eventually developed his own musical style that fused song and monologue.
