Therer"s no Wizard of Oz in Kansas, but there are Eight Casinos!
There are eight casinos to choose from in Kansas, five of which are Native American. The state is pretty large (think almost as big as Nevada, but turned on its side), so the casinos are far apart. Finding the best casino for your skill group might be less important than just finding the one closest to you!
Colorado, which borders Kansas to the west, has 37 casinos, and they are found mostly in three mountainous areas near Denver close to the middle of the state via US 70.
Below Kansas, Oklahoma now has 99 casinos, so many players in Kansas do have other options. For those who stay in-state, Kansas City, Kansas, a mile off of US 70 at the Missouri border, has two of the state's casinos and there are four more nearby.
Kansas Casino Rules
The state racing and gaming commission requires that all slot machines have a payback rate of at least 87 percent. Unfortunately, the commission doesn't release any other information, so the actual payback on specific machines, video poker, or other slots can only be inferred by similar machines in other jurisdictions.
Native American casinos, which are overseen by the Kansas State Gaming Agency, require that the minimum payback for electronic gaming devices is 80 percent.
Most casinos are open 24 hours a day. The minimum age to gamble is 21.
Dodge City
Boot Hill Casino, located at 4000 West Comanche Street (877-906-0777), is located inside the Hampton Inn, which has 108 hotel rooms, a fitness room, and indoor swimming pool. There is a snack bar, restaurant and gift shop, plus one bar.
The casino has 18 table games with blackjack, roulette, craps, Mississippi Stud and a few other games, plus a five-table poker room.
For slot players there are more than 700 games, including new issues and denominations from penny to $10.
Horton
Golden Eagle Casino at 1121 Goldfinch Road (888-464-5825), has a 368-seat Bingo parlor. There are also 16 table games (five poker) and 720 slot machines, including video poker. Denominations run from 5-cent to $1. The table games also have very reasonable rates, with bets as low as $2. A buffet, gift shop, and meeting space is also on hand.
Kansas City
7th Street Casino is at 777 North 7th Street (913-371-3500), and has one cafe and a bar. The casino touts itself as the home of 95 percent payback - on their range of 600 slots. If you get hungry, there is a buffet.
Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway is located at 777 Hollywood Casino Blvd. (913-288-9300). This is a Penn National-owned casino, with a minimum age of 21 - even in the restaurants. The raceway is home to the Hollywood 400, a NASCAR sprint cup event.
While there is no hotel for the large casino, there are several nearby. The property has several restaurants from buffet to steak house, and several bars. As with other Penn National Hollywood casinos, there is a nice poker room (12 tables) and dozens of other table games, including mini-baccarat. The casino also sports 2,000 slots, with denominations from a penny to $100, so you should be able to find a favorite machine!
Mayetta
Prairie Band Casino is found at 12305 150th Street (785-966-7777). The resort has a hotel (297 rooms) as well as an RV Park, meeting rooms and a business center. There are four restaurants to choose from.
The casino has 1,000 slots and of course, a player's club, where you can earn comps for your play. It also has 30 tables games with the regular favorites, plus Let-It-Ride, Pai Gow, and Mini-baccarat. The poker room, open 24-hours if the crowd stays, has five tables.
Mulvane
Kansas Star Casino, at 777 Kansas Star Drive (316-719-5000) has four restaurants, including a buffet, and a 150-room Hampton Inn. The casino has 1,800 slots, from penny variety to $25. Powhattan
