How to Make a Slip Cover in a Muslin Pattern

    • 1). Eyeball the couch or chair you will be making a slipcover for. Purchase a large amount of muslin fabric that will be certain to fit over an entire sofa. Buy more than you need because there are nooks and crannies in your furniture that will basically "eat up" all that fabric.

    • 2). Unroll your fabric and cut it off when you know you have enough to cover the couch. Drape the first piece of unrolled fabric over the arm rests and over the back of the couch (depending on the width of your muslin and the size of the couch, you will have to play a little bit with the positioning). Fit the fabrics snugly when you are draping. Cut another piece of muslin and drape it on top of the cushions on the front. See if this covers your entire surface. Tuck everything into the crevices and then pin all the pieces together.

    • 3). Use two large pieces of muslin for a love seat, as these can probably fit side by side and cover the entire thing. Fit them snugly into place and then pin the pieces together.

    • 4). Use a large piece of muslin to drape over a larger sofa covering it from front to back. Start where the couch meets the arm rests. Leave the arm rests uncovered for now. Drape another piece of fabric over the seat cushions and down the front. Cut two separate pieces to cover the arm rests. Fit everything snugly into place then pin all the pieces together.

    • 5). Cover a chair by draping the roll of fabric over the entire thing. Push the fabric into the crevices and cut when it starts touching the floor. Pin your fabric where you want to create a tight, cinched-in look.

    • 6). Use tailoring that is consistent with the design of your piece of furniture. Try to copy the way the existing fabric lays with your muslin and pin it into place (just be sure not to pin the fabric to the couch).

    • 7). Gently remove the pinned slipcovers from your furniture and take it immediately to the sewing machine. Stitch the pieces together and place it back onto the sofa, love seat or chair for a more detailed fitting. Determine where you may want elastic or dust ruffles to go. Make marks on your muslin fabric with marker so you can get an idea of what you want to produce when you make the final product with your more expensive fabric.
