How to Replace a 1993 BMW Head Gasket
- 1). Turn the engine off and allow it to completely cool down. Open up the hood and find the battery. Use a wrench to remove the negative cable from the terminal.
- 2). Place the drain pan underneath the radiator. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the radiator. Drain the coolant into the pan.
- 3). Pull the coolant line and the upper and lower radiator hoses from the cylinder using your hands. Use a wrench to remove the bolts attached to the rear timing belt cover. Lift the cover away from the engine.
- 4). Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the cylinder head off the gasket. Use a wrench to remove the bolts attached to the head gasket. Make a note of where you remove each bolt from, as you will need to insert them in exactly the same place when you install the new head gasket. Lift the head gasket from the engine.
- 5). Insert the new head gasket and fix it in place with the mounting bolts. Place the cylinder head over the top. Put the rear timing belt cover back in place and secure it with the mounting bolts. Insert the radiator hoses and coolant line into their respective connectors. Unscrew the radiator cap and pour coolant back into the radiator. Attach the negative cable back onto the battery terminal.
