Believing In The Belt, Believing In Yourself
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an extremely technical Martial Art. BJJ takes years to understand, and then upon understanding it, you turn around and realize you haven't even scratched the surface of the art. This can be frustrating in our fast paced world. We want it now and we want it quick. This leads many to abandon Jiu-Jitsu altogether, while others will continue in the art with the belief they will never achieve a black belt, it is somehow unattainable to them.
As an instructor I have failed both these people. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone and when someone abandons the art before they have even gotten a glimpse of it, it is a loss. The greater loss lies with the student who continues to train, believing they will never reach the black belt. This often leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Too much should never be placed on the belt. The belt is a bi-product of the art. If I give you a black belt when you have white belt skills you will fool no one. If I take off my black belt and tie on a white one, will I have loss all I gained? Of course not.
The belts are used to mark progress and are a great reward for your dedication. Each belt has a purpose and a time. Never be ashamed of your belt and covet the next one. Always learn and move forward with purpose. Become the best white, blue, purple or brown belt you can be and always believe you will reach the black belt. Have faith and commitment in yourself whether it takes 6 or 20 years you will reach it. When you do reach it be happy and proud, but you will come to learn it's just another step. If you look at a black belt as the end, you have failed to find the art.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a way of life, a way of understanding everything about yourself and your interactions with the world around you. You don't want to speed up your life, trust me, slow down and enjoy it. I believe everyone has the ability to become a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Does everyone have the commitment and dedication to become one? No.
Each practitioner no matter how long they have been involved in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu must constantly reaffirm their commitment and dedication to the art. They must continue to learn and move forward with purpose. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is always growing and evolving; you must always grow and evolve. I believe in Jiu-Jitsu, I believe in myself and I believe in my black belt. I will always strive to grow and evolve, I will always keep learning, if I do not I have failed the art and my black belt. I believe too much in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to ever let that happen.
Go train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, if you are already training don't stop. Believe in yourself; believe you will be a black belt. Put in your time, no matter how long that is. And I hope to see you on the mat with me someday, black belt tied firmly around your waist. Then we can do a little training and maybe you can teach me something, I love to learn!
