Mombasa Kenya - Why It Is An Important Port On East Africa

Mombasa town is the second largest city in Kenya and the largest port in the whole of East Africa.
It helps serve its landlocked neighbors such as Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, acting as a transit point for their imports and exports.
Very many ships dock at this port including luxury cruise ships from all over the world.
The town is also a very popular destination for tourists visiting the town.
This is due to its pristine white sandy beaches and star hotels.
The major languages in this town are English and Swahili.
The main religion in the area is Muslim although there are many Christians and other adherents from other denominations.
The indigenous people in the town include the Miji Kenda and the Swahili people.
There are however many people from other parts of the country living here.
This is because, many of them leave different parts of the country in search of employment in the booming tourism industry here.
There are also job opportunities at the seaport of Kilindini.
The town is rich in Swahili culture and the people are well-known for their Taarab music, which originates from the island of Zanzibar.
The women here dress in traditional printed sheets called Kanga which are made of beautiful eye-catching colors.
The men on the other hand wear the Kikoi.
The locals in this town are also well-known for their mouth-watering dishes.
This includes their traditional dishes such as, Pilau which is a tasty rice dish.
The town is also famous for its buildings, which have architecture dating back to the pre-colonial days.
The town of Mombasa has a tropical climate.
During the months of April and May, the area experiences a lot of rainfall.
Temperature in the region varies from a low of twenty degrees to highs of thirty degrees.
The town is bordered by Malindi and Watamu towns which are both just a few hours away.
The town has one major airport, the Moi International Airport.
This airport is very useful in transporting tourists from the country's capital Nairobi and also from other parts of the world.
The town is served by a railway line which connects it to Nairobi.
Railway travel offers a very scenic ride allowing you time to watch the countryside which you would otherwise miss if you travel by air.
The town also boasts of other amenities such as four major hospitals, major banks and other financial institutions, shops and markets.
