How to Replace the Front Struts on a 1993 Volkswagon Golf

    • 1). Put the Volkswagen's parking brake on, then lift the front with the jack and support the Golf with the jack stands. Unbolt the front wheels with the tire iron.

    • 2). Unbolt the bottom of the strut from the knuckle with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, but leave the bolts in their mounting holes. Pop the hood and remove the top strut mount from the car using Volkswagen special tool 3078. Remove the lower bolts and pull the strut out of the front of the car.

    • 3). Install the spring compressor onto the strut. Tighten it down using the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket, then remove the top cap on the strut with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket.

    • 4). Pull the strut out from the center of the coil spring. Transfer the bump stop and dust boot onto the replacement strut, then install the strut into the coil. Reinstall the strut cap with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket, then loosen the spring compressor with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket.

    • 5). Reinstall the strut in the front suspension using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, and Volkswagen special tool 3078. Reinstall the front wheels with the tire iron and take the Golf off the jack stands with the jack.
