How to Detail a Truck
- 1). Wash your car as usual. Be sure to dry your vehicle after washing to remove water spots.
- 2). Apply a coat of wax to the truck, rubbing in a circular motion. While the wax is drying, move to Step 3.
- 3). Vacuum the interior of the vehicle. Be sure to vacuum under the seats and in the seat runners.
- 4). Remove and vacuum the floor mats. Depending on the floor mat material, you may choose to simply throw them in the washing machine and hang them to dry before putting them back in the car. Otherwise, follow the same instructions as in Step 5 to clean the floor mats.
- 5). Shampoo the carpets using the carpet and upholstery cleaner. Be sure to give extra care to grease or oil spots. Deeper stains may require the attention of a professional, but you should be able to remove most stains with a little effort and a good cleaner. Re-vacuum the carpet after you have shampooed it.
- 6). Spray cotton swabs with window cleaner. Use these to clean the air conditioning vents, crevices around the gear shift, cup holder rims and any other small areas with hard-to-reach locations.
- 7). Spray the inside of the windows with window cleaner and wipe with a paper towel. You may also try to use newspaper if you find that the paper towels are leaving streaks on the windows.
- 8). Spray the vinyl in the car, including armrests, cup holders, dashboard and other vinyl surfaces with vinyl cleaner. Wipe thoroughly and repeat, if necessary.
- 9). Spray the steering wheel with vinyl cleaner or leather cleaner depending on the texture. Wipe well. The steering wheel is usually one of the dirtier surfaces in the vehicle, so you may have to repeat this step several time.
- 10
Use a dry cloth to dust away any loose dust particles and to wipe the front of the radio and console. - 11
Clean the seats. If they are made of leather, use a leather cleaner and a clean, dry cloth, if vinyl, use the vinyl cleaner. And if they are fabric seats, use the carpet and upholstery cleaner and scrub dirt and debris away, followed by a thorough vacuuming. - 12
Move on to the wheels. Use warm water and dish detergent to remove grease and road debris build-up from the metal surfaces of the rims. You can use a sponge or a wet cloth on this surface, but it may take several tries to remove all of the grease and dirt. - 13
Use the tire cleaner to clean the rubber of the tires. It is not necessary to clean the portions of the tire that are facing the underside of the car. Use the tire cleaner and a clean cloth to remove build-up and grease. You can follow up with a tire shine product, if you like. - 14
Clean the headlights. You can use a mild, slightly abrasive toothpaste to remove wax buildup and dirt from the headlights. - 15
Wax the truck. At this stage, you can buff the wax from the exterior of the vehicle. You can either use a car waxing pad or cloth by hand, or you can use an electric car buffer, which you would be able to purchase at any auto supply store. - 16
Clean the running boards and the inside of the doors. This is best done with the cloth you just buffed the car with as it will have enough wax left on it to shine these areas while cleaning them at the same time.
