How to Repair Audio Tape Decks
- 1). Dampen a clean cotton swab with a little anhydrous isopropyl alcohol. Locate the heads, which are the metal fixtures at the bottom of the tape doc that read the tape. Scrub the heads gently with the swab and then dry with a clean cotton swab when finished.
- 2). Locate the capstan, which is the metal spindle on the right-hand side of the tape heads. Press play on the tape player so that the capstan spins, and gently wipe it using an alcohol-soaked cotton swab. Dry the capstan with a clean swab.
- 3). Find the pinch roller, which is the black rubber roller that guides the tape. Rotate the roller manually while wiping with a dampened swab. Wipe the stationary plastic and metal guide posts. Wipe all these parts dry with a clean swab.
- 4). Turn off all audio equipment. Pick up the demagnetizer, plug it in and switch it on. Gradually move the head of the demagnetizer toward the tape heads and slowly move it back and forth over the heads.
- 5). Pull the demagnetizer away from the tape heads slowly. Switch off and unplug the demagnetizer.
