How Exactly Do Credit Card SkyMiles Work?
- According to American Express' website, under the Delta SkyMiles program, cardholders may earn one mile for every $1 spent on their credit card up to $60,000. The limit is raised to $100,000 for the Gold Delta SkyMiles American Express. Thereafter, card members may earn one mile for every $2 spent. Holders of American Express' Platinum Delta SkyMiles card are eligible to earn one mile for every $1 spent on all of their purchases without limit.
- American Express also specifies that card members may earn two miles for every $1 spent on qualifying purchases on Delta Air Lines, including Delta Connection and Delta Shuttle flights.
- SkyMiles are generally only awarded for purchases made with the appropriate American Express card. Transactions such as balance transfers and cash advances are not eligible to earn miles.
- Once the SkyMiles have been awarded, the recipient may redeem the miles for award flights, according to the SkyMiles program.
Notably, American Express Gold and Platinum Delta SkyMiles as well as Delta Reserve Credit cardholders have an option to redeem their miles towards all or part of the price of their Delta tickets.
According to an example posted on Delta's website, if an eligible cardholder's fare on a given flight is $325, the cardholder may redeem 30,000 SkyMiles and reduce the cost of the airfare by $300 and pay the balance of $25 with an American Express Credit Card. - Bonus Delta SkyMiles will post to the cardholder's account eight to 12 weeks after the end of each month. Furthermore, American Express specifies that that the account must be active and in good standing to receive SkyMiles.
