    • 1). Raise the hood of the car and set the hood prop in place. Disconnect the battery cable ends from the battery with the ½-inch wrench. They only need to be loosened enough, so you can remove them by hand.

    • 2). Loosen the nuts on both sides of the solenoid switch, using the 9/16-inch wrench. Remove the nuts paying close attention to which wire came from which side. Crossing them will cause loss of power to the starter and switch.

    • 3). Remove the two screws from the side of the mount on the solenoid switch, using the 3/8-inch socket and ratchet. The switch will fall from the firewall.

    • 4). Place the new solenoid on the firewall and secure it in place using the screws from the old switch. Make sure it's set snugly in place.

    • 5). Remove the nuts from the side posts of the new switch. Connect all the wires to the switch, making sure you don't skip one. Install the lock washer and nut snugly in place. Over-tightening the nuts can break the seal inside the solenoid, causing a malfunction.

    • 6). Reconnect the battery cable ends. Connect the negative side first and then the positive side to prevent a power surge that may blow a fuse.

    • 7). Start the vehicle to make sure everything is working correctly. Remove your tools from under the hood and close the hood.
