How to Insulate a Mug
- 1). Measure the circumference and height of your coffee mug and the width of the mug handle. Subtract about ½ inch from the height of the mug and subtract the width of the mug handle from the circumference. For instance, if your mug measures 5 inches high and 8 inches around with a ½-inch-wide handle, your final measurements will be 4 ½ inches by 7 ½ inches.
- 2). Cut one rectangle from each of your felt colors using your final measurements. Choose your main color and lay it on top of the other piece of felt. For instance, if you choose brown and aqua felt and want the aqua to be the main color, lay it on top of the brown.
- 3). Draw simple designs in chalk on your top piece of felt. Cut them out with scissors so the bottom felt color shows through. For instance, you could draw stylized owls, polka dots or flowers.
- 4). Stitch the two pieces of felt together around the edges, leaving a 1/8-inch seam allowance. Also stitch around the edges of your cutout designs. This gives your cozy a patchwork look.
- 5). Stitch three buttons to the left short edge of your cozy. Place one button ¼ inch from the top corner, a second ¼ inch from the bottom corner and one centered right between the two.
- 6). Cut three pieces of macramé cord about 3 inches long. Bend each piece of cord into a loop and stitch the ends to the right short side of the cozy as you did the buttons on the left side. Wrap the cozy around your mug and loop the macramé loops over the buttons to close the cozy around the mug.
