Definition:

Infant colic is a condition that’s usually diagnosed when a baby cries for more than 3 hours per day, more than 3 days per week, for more than 3 weeks. Colic usually begins somewhere around the third week of life and is gone by the time the baby is 3 months old.

Colicky babies are usually healthy, and the crying is unexplained. Milk allergies rarely cause colic, and using medications to treat gassiness doesn't seem to help the condition.

Breastfeeding moms may be able to reduce signs of colic by eliminating dairy or caffeine from their diets. Other ways to reduce colic include rocking and holding baby, going for a ride in the car, and using an infant swing.
