How to Treat Algae in a Fountain

    • 1). Read the owner's manual for your fountain and pump. If there are specific cleaning instructions, follow those before trying to clean the fountain on your own.

    • 2). Unplug the fountain's pump before cleaning the fountain itself. Remove the pump and clean it separately from the fountain.

    • 3). Take any stones, pebbles or other decorative elements out of the fountain before cleaning it. Clean them separately in warm, soapy water.

    • 4). Empty the water out of the fountain.

    • 5). Clean the fountain using mild detergent and a soft cloth. If you are unable to remove the algae with a soft cloth, try a more abrasive, nylon-bristled brush.

    • 6). Avoid using bleach on your fountain if you can. It will harm plant and animal life and can deteriorate the liner and pump components. However, you can use white vinegar to clean algae if a more acidic cleaner is needed.

    • 7). Rinse the fountain thoroughly and refill it with water treated with algae-preventing products.

    • 8). Make sure your fountain is placed in the shade, as algae requires sunlight to grow.
