- 1). Put on old clothes because this is a messy project and you may get paint on yourself.
- 2). Prepare your medium for splatter painting. If you are painting a piece of clothing like a shirt or jeans, prewash and dry the item to prevent it from shrinking after the paint session. Place newspaper or cardboard inside the piece of clothing so that the paint only permeates one side of the clothing. If you are painting shoes, stuff them with newspaper to protect the inside of the shoe. If you are painting canvas, make sure it has been primed.
- 3). Cover the area you are working with a large drop cloth or newspapers.
- 4). Place your medium, whether it's a pair of pants, canvas, butcher paper, shoes or other item, on the drop cloth.
- 5). Pour different paint colors onto an artist's palette or onto different paper plates.
- 6). Dip your brush into a color until it's saturated and dripping with the paint.
- 7). Stand over the medium you are painting and let the paint drip from the brush onto the medium. Move your hand around in different motions to give the paint some movement and to create thinner lines between the drips of paint.
- 8). Dip your brush into the color just enough to get paint on the brush and stand over the medium you are painting. Flick the brush against your other hand so the paint sprays onto the medium below for a different approach to splatter painting.
- 9). Experiment with both these methods while splatter painting your chosen medium. Let the medium dry according to the specific paint you purchased. Acrylic paint on canvas usually takes a few hours. Fabric paint usually takes 24 hours.

Seal an acrylic painting on canvas with an acrylic sealer. Follow the directions of the particular brand you purchase. Care for a fabric-painted item according to the manufacturer's directions of the paint you purchased. Sealing a fabric item will also depend on what type of item you painted.
